The Mayor of Maidstone is the First Citizen of the Borough. The
Mayor connects the present day with history, acting as a symbol of
continuity.
Our First Citizen can come from any walk of life, gender or
ethnic background.
The Mayor undertakes many social engagements within the Borough
of Maidstone and acts as a link between the various bodies and
organisations.
The Mayor presides over Full Council meetings.

The Worshipful Mayor of Maidstone,
Cllr Richard Ash
The current Mayor is Cllr Richard Ash. Richard was born in
Bath and graduated from Sheffield University with an Honours degree
in Geography. He taught in selective schools in both Essex
and Kent until retiring in July 2005.
Richard was elected to Maidstone Borough Council in 1992 and his
particular interests are in Planning and Environmental
issues. He is an active member of the Bearsted Woodland
Trust.
Richard has been a Parish Councillor since 1991 and has been
Chairman of his local Parish Council at Bearsted since December
2004.
One of his hobbies, stemming from his childhood, is an interest
in rocks, fossils and minerals. Amongst his other hobbies are
stamp collecting, visiting antique fairs, where he is particularly
interested in porcelain and glass, and bell ringing, which he
undertakes at Holy Cross Church, Bearsted.
Richard is married to Christine and they have two adult sons:
Stephen, who works in Geneva, and Ian, who lives and works in
London.
