Overview & Scrutiny Committees

How to get involved

There are a number of ways you can keep up to date and get involved in the work of the Overview and Scrutiny Committees.  To subscribe to any of these services or for more information contact the OSC team.

If you have been invited to speak at an Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting, our Attending Scrutiny Guide will let you know what to expect.

The E-Bulletin and Agenda Alert

The Scrutiny Section provides two free electronic services to allow members of the public to keep abreast of the activities of the Committees:

The E-Bulletin is a bi-monthly newsletter which summarises the Committees' work over the previous months, highlights upcoming meetings and reports on interesting news.

Agenda Alert is a regular service which e-mails out the links to the online agendas for upcoming meetings, allowing people to see what is going to be discussed at each meeting. This is an especially useful service as, in the event of an amended agenda being issued, an additional Agenda Alert is sent out ensuring that those wishing to attend a meeting always have up to date papers.

Attending Meetings

By attending Overview and Scrutiny meetings you can follow the progress of inquiries in person. Meetings usually take place at the Town Hall in Maidstone. Check the Committee homepages for the agendas for meetings and to confirm the venue.

All Overview and Scrutiny meetings are open to the public and members of the public are very welcome to come along. However, if the Committee needs to discuss confidential information regarding an item on the agenda, the press and members of the public will be asked to leave the room during the discussion.

Submitting Evidence to an Inquiry

The Overview and Scrutiny Committees welcome views or comments from members of the public in connection with any of their inquiries. Find out more about how you can submit evidence and comment on current reviews via the links on the Committees' 'Current Review' pages.

Suggesting a Topic for Inquiry

Is there anything you would like for the Overview and Scrutiny Committees to review? The Committees welcome suggestions for topics of inquiries and will consider issues put forward by any members of the public, interest groups or businesses.

Suggestion for reviews must meet the following criteria:

  • affect a group of people living within the Maidstone Borough;
  • relate to a service, event or issue in which the Council has a significant stake or over which the Council has an influence;
  • not be an issue which overview and scrutiny has considered during the last 12 months;
  • not relate to an indvidual service complaint;
  • not relate to matters dealt with by another Council committee, unless the issue deals with procedure.

To recommend a topic for review, complete the Review Suggestion Form and send it to osc@maidstone.gov.uk
