West Kent Primary Care Trust (PCT)

NHS Logo

West Kent Primary Care Trust (PCT) is your gateway to NHS services in West Kent. Some 655,700 people live in the West Kent area, covering the areas of Dartford, Gravesham, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Malling, Tunbridge Wells, and Maidstone.

The PCT has three core functions:

Our main role is to commission (or contract) services from other providers, including GPs, dentists, opticians and community pharmacies, acute trusts and mental health trusts.

We also  provide some services ourselves - mainly through our clincal teams that work across the community and in community hospitals.

The third important strand to our work is helping to improve the health of the people in West Kent, for example through services like the stop smoking services.

Most people in West Kent are healthier than the national average and can expect to live longer. However, there are some communities where life expectancy is up to 14 years lower than in other parts of West Kent. This fact forms the core of the PCT’s Health Inequalities agenda where greater emphasis is being placed on helping people to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Most resource (89%) goes on commissioning with 6% on providing services directly and 5% making up other corporate costs.
