Recycling on the up

Maidstone residents have given a big thumbs up to the improved fortnightly recycling service and retained weekly refuse collection.

For the first 20,000 homes to receive the new service, recycling rates have increased by 39%.

Maidstone Borough Council Cabinet Member, Tony Harwood, said: We have had a very positive response to our new improved service, so a big thank you to all those residents who have supported the scheme so far.”

The increase means an extra 74 tonnes of recycling has been collected over a two week period from households with the new service, and Cllr Harwood is encouraged by the figures: “We listened to what residents told us they wanted – an improved fortnightly recycling service for paper, cardboard, plastics, tins and cans, whilst keeping a weekly rubbish collection.   This is a great start and shows that people are doing their bit for the environment.”

Another 20,000 households will receive the service in October and everyone will have the improved fortnightly recycling collection by March 2009, whilst keeping a weekly rubbish collection.
