Group Constitution

A constitution is simply the aims and rules that a group will use. It is a written understanding of what the group is going to do and how it is going to do it. It is important because:

  • Without this written understanding the group could find itself at cross purposes and jobs won't be achieved
  • It will serve as a reference and help to resolve problems in times of controversy
  • Outsiders and especially potential funders will want to see that the group is democratic and accountable. This involves having a clear procedure by which decisions are made.

Your constitution will probably want to include sections on:

  • Name of Organisation
  • Aims
  • Powers
  • Membership
  • Officers
  • Meetings
  • Committee
  • Rules of Procedure
  • Finances
  • Dissolution
  • Amendments to the Constitution

Examples of Group Constitutions:
