How we pay your benefit

Housing Benefit is paid:

  • If you pay rent to a private landlord your benefit will usually be paid directly into your bank account, unless you rent from a housing association or have difficulty managing your affairs.
  • In some circumstances for example, if you are more than eight weeks in arrears with your rent, we must pay your housing benefit direct to your landlord unless it would not be in your interest to do so.
  • If you are a council tenant we will pay benefit direct to your rent account reducing the amount you have to pay.

When do we pay Housing Benefit:

  • New benefit claims are paid in arrears
  • If we make payments to you they will be paid every two weeks in arrears.
  • If we make payments direct to your landlord we will pay them every four weeks in arrears

Council Tax Benefit is paid:

  • Direct to your council tax account reducing the amount you have to pay.
