Income from Business (or Non-Domestic) Rates helps to pay for the services provided by Maidstone Borough Council, Kent County Council, the Kent Police Authority and the Medway Fire and Rescue Authority. The amount of money collected by Maidstone Borough Council in respect of Business Rates is passed onto Central Government and is then redistributed back to these organisations according to a specific formula.
In addition to income from Busines Rates, the council also receives money in the way of grants from Government, from Council Tax and for charges for a range of services offered by the Council.
